We live in a world where around 79% young people aged 15-24 use the internet and are perpetually online. Technology shapes how they learn, connect, create, and how they imagine their futures.
However, beneath the convenience of our hyper-digital lives lies a complex infrastructure, energy consumption, and ecological costs that often go unseen.
To help young people navigate this reality, we are excited to introduce a new module of the Unboxing Tech Toolkit. This new module is called 'Unboxing Internet Infrastructures' and is designed to empower youth to build a healthier relationship with technology and make informed, sustainable digital choices.
What Is the Unboxing Tech Toolkit?
The Unboxing Tech Toolkit is a hands-on, youth-centred guide to understanding the digital world from the inside out. Through interactive activities, reflections, and real-world examples, the toolkit helps young people:
Discover how the internet really works - from data centres and undersea cables to the energy systems that power them.
Unpack the ecological footprint of our digital lives, exploring the hidden environmental impacts behind everyday online activities.
Understand the life cycle of emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence and the ethical questions they raise.
Build the skills and agency to make sustainable digital decisions in their day-to-day lives.
Join the larger conversation on internet governance, including digital rights, accessibility, and the ethical management of technology’s environmental impact.
A New Blog Series You Do Not Want to Miss
To accompany the toolkit, we are launching a new series of blogs that dive deeper into the ideas, conversations, and critical questions it raises. These blogs will explore themes such as:

Each piece in the blog series tries to dive deeper into themes covered in the toolkit. We are positive these blogs will encourage our readers to think critically and enrich their understanding of internet infrastructures and their relationship with sustainability.
Changemaker Series: Insights From Global Experts
Alongside our thematic blogs, we are excited to share an exciting Changemaker series with blogs featuring conversations with experts who are reimagining what a sustainable and inclusive digital world could look like.
We spoke with inspiring thinkers, researchers, and practitioners, including Geraldine de Bastion, Mike Jensen, Katrin Fritsch, Tamara Kneese, Michelle Thorne, Yen Lin, and Hari, who bring diverse perspectives on digital sustainability, community power, and the future of the internet.

These interviews offer rich insights, ideas, and practical pathways for young people who want to engage more deeply with internet governance and climate advocacy.
Join Us as We Unbox the Internet Together
Whether you are curious about how your data travels, concerned about the internet's climate impact, or simply eager to understand the systems you use every day, we invite you to explore, question, and imagine with us.
Stay tuned for the first blog in the series, and get ready to unbox the digital world - one piece at a time.
